Born to live in Berlin

BORN TO LIVE IN BERLIN

An independent documentary about the housing crisis in Berlin

BERLIN IS NO LONGER THE CITY IT ONCE WAS. HOMES EMPTIED, RENTS TRIPLED, FAMILIES FORCED TO LEAVE. BORN TO LIVE IN BERLIN TELLS THE STORY OF THE HOUSING CRISIS THROUGH THE VOICES OF THOSE WHO LIVE IT EVERY DAY: TENANTS, ACTIVISTS, NEIGHBOURHOOD COMMUNITIES RESISTING REAL ESTATE SPECULATION AND GENTRIFICATION.

BORN TO LIVE IN BERLIN

Berlin has always been a place where it was possible to live differently. An open, creative, accessible city. But something has broken. In recent years, the German capital has become one of Europe's most speculative real estate markets. Rents have exploded, entire neighbourhoods have been emptied of their long-time residents and replaced by investors and the newly wealthy. Those who cannot afford the new market — families, artists, workers, migrants — are forced to leave the city they built with their own lives. Born to Live in Berlin follows the protagonists of this struggle over time: tenants organising to avoid eviction, activists occupying streets and buildings, collective housing projects trying to imagine an alternative. The film is a long, close-up look at one of the great social issues of our time: the right to housing. The second independent documentary by Kreativerhof, following Born to Die in Berlin, this film broadens the perspective and goes to the heart of the problem: who has the right to live in this city?
